The Island Golf Club

The Island Golf Club Founded in 1890, and situated to the North of Dublin City, The Island Golf Club continues to be regarded as one of the finest Links courses on the Island of Ireland.

Just 30-minutes from Dublin’s city center lies The Island Golf Club, enjoying a tranquil setting on a narrow peninsula that borders the Irish Sea on three sides. Over 100 years old, the Island Golf Club was founded in 1890 and has consistently been ranked as one of Ireland’s top links golf courses. Until 1973 it was reached by boat across an estuary from Malahide, just north of Dublin. Its proximity to Ireland’s capital, combined with its solitude on a narrow peninsula, makes The Island a tranquil reserve where golf is the prized pastime. Though you may not have heard of it, you will not want to leave The Island off your Ireland golf vacation.

Delve into the golf course, and you will find a great selection of holes. You will start off at “Partridge Hollow”, as the first hole is known. It is not the most difficult hole you will ever face, but the route is gorgeous. You drive down the cavern shielded by twenty-five feet dunes, and catch a glimpse of the sea on your walk up towards the green. The signature hole comes at the par three thirteenth, by the name of “Broadmeadow”. The conservatives will lay up and find themselves in a recoverable position short of the green. The more daring player will go for the green in one, but run the risk of finding the beach and a probable bogey.

2011 British Open Championship winner Darren Clarke described The Island as “A fantastic links which tests every club in the bag,” while The Island has been utilised as a Qualifying Couse for the British Open Championship in 2013 and 2014.The views of Dublin City, the Irish Sea and the surrounding lands can only be described as breath-taking. Rarely does a course deliver so many picture perfect views in 18 holes.

The accolades which The Island has received speak volumes for the quality of this course:

  • Number 14-ranked course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2014.
  • Golf World November 2005 – The Island was voted number 26 “must play” courses in Golf World Top 100 Courses in the World
