Portmarnock Resort – Jameson Golf Links is positioned on the shoreline of a rugged peninsula that juts out into the Irish Sea, in the small coastal town of Portmarnock.
Jameson Golf Links (Formally Portmarnock Links) The course sits on 208 acres and was designed by legendary German golfer Bernhard Langer and opened in June 1995 to great acclaim. This modern 18 hole course is a par 70, measuring 6,175 yards from the back tees. Although modern it has a lovely old-fashioned feel about it, Bernhard Langer has been successful in creating a classic masterpiece. This traditional links course has an excellent design and layout, the dunes and natural terrain have been cleverly used in its design, it flows naturally over the seaside duneland. There are some really strong holes here, but they are all interesting and varied with their own challenges, there is not a weak hole here.
Features of this course include,
- elevated tees and greens,
- blind approaches and doglegs,
- deep bunkers and
- not forgetting the typical links sea breezes all creating an exciting round of golf.
When the wind blows it creates an entirely different round of golf, very testing and difficult. The first six holes are played away from the coastal area on gently undulating ground but then turn back with the back nine holes playing along the sand dunes and offering occasional views of the sea but with lovely vistas. These last nine holes are also the more difficult, they require patience and concentration, with controlled shots.
The course is beautifully maintained, the gently undulating fairways are narrow but luxurious, the large raised greens are fast, there are no less than 98 strategically placed bunkers here, they are deep and penalising but are always visible, then there are the wild grasses and gorses to contend with as well, the rough is thick and difficult to negotiate.Portmarnock provides an uplifting and engaging round right through to the end. It really is the greatest seaside golfing indulgence!
