Malahide Castle and Gardens are home to a well preserved castle, some sections date back to the 12th century, it is one of the oldest and most historic castles in Ireland and sits amongst 250 acres of parkland. This historic castle is located in the pretty seaside town of Malahide on the east coast of Ireland. It was the principal seat of the Talbot family for around eight hundred years, from 1185 to 1973 when the last Talbot died. It served as both a fortress and private home.
This castle was constructed around the original tower house that dates to the 12th century, it was extended and remodelled over the years, so has an interesting assortment of architectural styles. The Great Hall was built in the 15th century, the entry hall and corner towers date to the 18th century.
Access is by guided tour only and they last about forty five minutes. Friendly and engaging guides narrate the story of the Talbots at Malahide in this live tour, guests are taken through the various rooms, the rich history of the castle comes to life through their stories of the Lords and Ladies associated with the castle, as well as the five known friendly ghosts who are said to reside here, it is an engaging and memorable experience. The tour takes in many of the impressive rooms here including, the Oak Room, Great Hall, the Small and Large Drawing Rooms and bedrooms. These rooms contain many original features, including intricate plasterwork and are furnished with beautiful period furniture and antique furnishings all dating to the 18th century. Admire the extensive collection of portraits that adorn the walls, they come from the National Portrait Collection. Family heirlooms and artefacts from across the centuries serve as illustrative examples of the wealth and how they lived.
The large majestic gardens are immaculately presented and consist of the Walled Garden and West Lawn. The West Lawn extends to twenty two acres and The Walled Garden around four acres, complete with seven glasshouses and a Victorian conservatory. Both of these lovely gardens were designed by Milo, the 7th Lord Talbot of Malahide. They are classified as small botanical gardens with more than 5,000 different species of plants, which are thriving here. Most of these were collected in Australasia, but come from all over the world.
The Castle History Museum is situated by the Castle Courtyard, and is home to an interactive exhibition area where the history of the Talbot family is retold.
The Avoca Restaurant serves a wonderful selection of delicious food and home-baked goods, in a cosy and inviting atmosphere. There is also a retail area that stocks items from Irish designers, crafts people and artisan products.
Malahide Castle and Gardens are open all year round.
