Dingle is an attractive town nestled in a natural bay, located in County Kerry, it is the only town on the Dingle Peninsula that, sits on the Atlantic coast. This charming town was a major fising port and this still plays an active role in the towns economy. Today tourism is a major industry with visitors flocking to this area for the amazing natural and breath-taking scenery, the peace and tranquility and the unique culture and heritage. The Dingle Peninsula extends 48 kilometres into the Atlantic Ocean. The peninsula is backed by a collection of mountains that form its spine. Dingle provides a good base for exploring this area.
The coastline comprises of steep sea cliffs, interrupted by sandy beaches, with two large sand areas at Inch in the south and Maharees to the north. Slea Head, is one of the most dramatic driving routes in Europe, and the closest point in Europe to America. This area has something to offer everyone including, safe sandy beaches, ideal for swimming and other water activities, surfing and windsurfing are very popular here, it offers some of the best surfing in ireland, walking routes and hiking trails that cater to all abilities, sea angling, arts and film festivals and much more.
Dingle towns most famous resident is an adult Bottlenose dolphin called Fungie, he came here in 1983 and has not left since. People from all over the world and people of all ages come to see him. Take a boat tour to see him in his natural harbour habitat. Take time to see the Fahan Beehive Huts, these unusual igloo-shaped structures were homes to monks who fled from Europe during the Dark Ages. The town has a number of art and craft shops where you see browse amongst the handmade local wares from talented craftspersons. Dingle Distillery recently opened in the town and is one of only five independent distilleries in Ireland. Pop along and take in a tour after which you can sample some of their products.
Fine dining is a way of life here, you will get to sample some of the best local produce when you dine in the many restaurants and pubs here. Seafood is obviously a popular feature on the menus here. You can look forward to some top-notch restaurants in the town.
Music plays an important role here, with a rich music tradition associated with the town, and there are lots of opportunities to hear traditional music in many venues in the town particularly in the “old world pubs”, it won’t be long until you are tapping away. Much of the social life of the town centres around pubs, so expect to spend some time in them.
