Wicklow Golf Club is located close to Wicklow town in the east coast of Ireland. The club was founded in 1904 with a nine hole layout, some ninety years later it was extended and altered by the forceful duo of Tom Craddock and Pat Ruddy, in testament to their great design the course has remained relatively unchanged since then. Over time it has matured into a fine parkland course, with the old and new holes blending seamlessly together. It is a par 71, measuring 5,440 yards from the back tees.
It sits in an idyllic location following the wild and glorious coastline of Wicklow and makes the most out of its stunning surroundings. This scenic parkland/clifftop course follows the natural contours and undulations of the terrain. Characteristics to be found here are plenty of hazards in different forms dependent on their nature. Rock formations, bands of water and plenty of bunkering add further dimensions to the course further enhancing the challenges of this tricky but original course. There is a nice variety of holes to be found here, some quirky, some inventive and many memorable. The collection of par 3's are deemed to be some of the toughest in the country. There are splendid cliff-top views, and with lovely panoramas throughout the course. Owing to its exposed location wind can be an issue when playing here, it can range from a gentle breeze to a gale. There is little flat ground and some quite high climbs between greens and tees, especially on the back nine, a buggy is probably the way to get around.
The course is beautifully maintained and in super condition. The large undulating greens run fast and true, the rolling fairways are lush, gorse and scrub are prevalent and can be punishing,
Awaiting you at Wicklow Golf Club is a round of unbeatable golfing pleasure. Course management is required here, make your scores early on and avoid any errors on the homeward stretch.
None to date.
With such a great variety and many strong contenders it wasn't easy but the 17th just stood out for us. It is the signature hole a par 3, 161 yards, called "The Glen", played from an elevated tee into the neck of the valley, it has a forced carry of almost 150 yards over a chasm with water hazards in front and the remaining three sides enclosed by shrubbery and rough. A true and final test of nerve at the end of the round.
