Waterford Castle Golf Course is situated in a luxury island resort covering 310 acres, in Waterford in the south east of Ireland. It is completely detached from the mainland, set on its own private island within the River Suir and has some fabulous views and scenery. Access is via a private ferry that runs regularly from the mainland, providing a tranquil and peaceful location. The course was designed by Des Smyth, and opened in 1990. This parkland course is a par 72, measuring 6,814 yards from the medal tees.
The course is laid out over 200 acres in a beautiful parkland setting where nature abounds. The clever design of the course allows it to route harmoniously within the wooded and parkland landscape, giving it a mature feel. Features here include, mature trees, big greens, pristine fairways, several challenging dog-leg holes, crafted and contoured bunkering and water hazards, not forgetting the local wildlife that often like to make a presence, don't be startled to see deer or hare wandering about, and geese, ducks and swans on the water. Although surrounded by water, it has an extra four internal water features coming into play on four of the holes. It has a good strong variety of holes, each with their own appeal, challenges and some lovely views, there are a couple of interesting par 5's on the homeward stretch. The course has a gently undulating terrain so is easy to walk around allowing you to get the most from the fabulous setting.
It is a wonderful course where the course is well maintained, the undulating, sand-based, contoured greens are immaculate, quick and consistent, the rolling fairways are pristine, a substantial number of well defined bunkers are well placed to test the long hitter.
You will get a fair and challenging game of golf here, its relaxed tree-lined rhythm makes it a pleasure to play. From the offset it was regarded as a fantastic course and its popularity has just continued to grow amongst the golfing community.
Waterford Castle is regarded as the only “Island Golf Course” in Ireland as access to the course is by a short complimentary ferry.

For us there could only be the 3rd hole, known as "The Bridge of Sighs" for this is where their Swilken Bridge is located. It is a fabulous par 4, 372 yards, your tee shot is over a substantial lake through a gap in the trees, accuracy is needed here to carry you 170 yards over the lake. Your next shot is to a sloping green with a second lake to the right and a bunker on each side.
