There are not many golfers who have not heard of the Royal Portrush Golf Club, it is renowned worldwide. This illustrious club is located in an evocative setting in the seaside town of Portrush, County Antrim, Northern Ireland and is one of the oldest clubs in Ireland dating back to 1888. There are two great courses here the Dunluce and Valley course. The Dunluce course was designed by Harry S. Colt and the name derives from the ruins of Dunluce Castle that overlooks it and can be seen frequently during a round. This 18 hole championship course is a par 72, measuring 7,143 yards from the back tees.
The course has a remarkable design, it is a masterpiece of golf architecture. Sitting in an enviable position amongst some of the most astounding scenery to be found in Ireland. It benefits from the natural contours and dunes that were incorporated into its design. This classic seaside links course tracks the rugged links land, that continuously changes in both direction and elevation whilst continously providing some of the most breath-taking scenery anywhere in Ireland. The fairways huddle into the natural valleys between towering sand dunes, the small greens sit seamlessly into the landscape and the greens are usually protected by natural sandy hammocks. The quality of each hole on the course is incomparable, it has some of the most exciting and scenic holes that blend in naturally with the landscape. The opening holes are particularly strong but thats not to say that the rest are any less weak, its just unusual in historic links courses. Impossible rough, doglegs and testing greens, in combination with the unpredictable weather make this course an admirable test for even the most accomplished golf enthusiast.
The course is pristine with manicured tiered undulating greens that are fast and true, the fairways are frequently lined with bushes/shrubs, the bunkers are deep, in fact the biggest bunker in Ireland is located here on the 17th tee, Big Nellie, an apt name.
This wonderful course has many attributes from its various wonderful sea views to the impressive dunes, the excellent layout and holes there are all great reasons to visit this course but, it has to be said it is undoubtedly one of the finest courses in Ireland and one not to be missed. It provides a totally mesmerising and enjoyable round of golf.
The best hole for us has to be the famed Calamity Corner, the 14th hole, a par 3, 210 yard an essential play for any follower of the game. It is a slicer's bane and one of the most intimidating tee shots ever. Located between the tee and the green is a deep abyss, which must be cleared to stand any chance of making your three, then there is tall brush to the right to contend with also. It is difficult to describe the feeling as you stand on this tee, looking out across the Valley links below, knowing it will take a fantastic shot to hit the small target across the void.
