Course Description

Narin and Portnoo Golf Club enjoys a secluded location in a pretty seaside town in County Donegal, it is a little out of the way but worth it, it really is a stunning course. It has the most amazing panoramic views of the nearby Gweebarra Bay. It was established in 1930 as a nine hole course and it was not until 1965 that the course expanded to the present 18 holes. This traditional links course is a par 73, measuring 6,269 yards from the back tees, it has a natural and exposed feel to it.

The course sits well on the natural terrain and its layout and design makes the most of the contours of this coastal region. It benefits from a good design and layout that has not aged over time, with many challenging and some quirky holes, there is a good variety. There is a great mixture of features to be found here, not least firm, elevated greens, sharp technical dog-legs. The course starts off a little slow but this soon changes after the 6th and especially when you reach the dunes the holes really come into their own then. The diverse scenery certainly enhances the experience here, with views out over the bay and the Atlantic Ocean. You will probably never find a more secluded and tranquil course, it feels like you are at the edge of the world. Being a links course you are exposed to the elements with the wind being a major player here, it could be a gentle breeze or be blowing a gale, it will certainly factor into your game. To beat this course you will need to have your wits about you, some thought is necessary before you play a hole.

This undulating course is beautifully maintained and always in superb condition, the fairways vary from wide to quite narrow, the greens are firm, fast and true, the rough is deep and unforgiving and there are strategically placed bunkers.

Awaiting you when you play here is a natural and genuine links course with captivating scenery as well as an interesting and challenging course, it really is golf at its best.

Our Favourite Hole

The best hole by far for us was the the 8th, Downstrands, a par 3, 165 yards. Firstly stop and admire the panoramic view, it is links golf at its best. Then revert your attention back to how you are going to play your shot, it is a downhill drive that goes over a chasm generally into the wind where you end up on a two tier green, protected by the undulating terrain but has a serious water hazard to the rear. The big hitters should fare well here.
