Course Description

The club is Galways oldest club being established back in 1895, it is located on the outskirts of Galway City, overlooking the beautiful Galway Bay. It has been in its current location since 1925 with the current course having been designed by Dr Alister McKenzie. In recent years the course has undergone an extensive re-design of a number of the greens to keep pace with technology, whilst, still retaining its natural charm. This 18 hole par 70 measures 6,251 yards from the back tees, so is not overly long to play.

Despite the fact that the Atlantic Ocean features on several holes, the course is designed to the specifications of a top quality open parkland course. The course is tree-lined with an undulating terrain, there are a few slopes to climb but, nothing too strenuous. It is laid out in two loops of nine. There is a good variety of holes, a number of which are memorable, some are lined with trees so need to keep that ball straight.

The first four holes are beside the beach, you than pass over the coast road through a pedestrian tunnel to acces the remaining holes, that are more parkland. The natural features of the course provide the most challenges, it has an abundance of trees and gorse that will punish a wayward shot. Elevated and tiered greens are another feature here. It has remained traditional but has modern touches. Beware of the winds, when it blows it can make things tough.

The course is kept in a pristine condition, the greens are very fast, and manicured to perfection. the fairways are equally good, the bunkers are strategically placed and the rough is tough.

Galway Golf Club assures you an excellent golfing experience, breath-taking scenery and one of the friendliest welcomes you will ever get. It is continually designated as one of the finest courses west of the river Shannon.

Our Favourite Hole

With amazing views throughout and a really clever overall course design, this is a difficult choice. However, the 14th hole is an exceptional par 4 and is our choice. Measuring over 385 yards from the Men’s Tee, carefully placed bunkers make this hole a superb tactical battle. The views on the hole are also spectacular – even if you do find sand!
