Course Description

County Louth Golf Club is located in the small village of Baltray, at the mouth of the River Boyne in North East Ireland. The club dates back to 1892 but the current course was opened in 1938, with the original 18 holes being designed by Tom Simpson, a renowned golf architect. It is a links course, par 72 and measures over 7,000 yards from the medal tees. The course underwent some minor changes in recent years but, fundamentally still retains its original design.

The golf course sits on a 190 acre site of seaside links terrain and has established the honour of being one of the finest and most enjoyable courses in Ireland. This championship course is laid out in two loops of nine holes with most holes running in different directions, except for the 12th and 13th that run adjacent to the sea. During its construction it was only necessary to introduce fifty bunkers, the remainder were provided by the natural terrain of the land. This natural course is defined by the surrounding sand dunes and they provide a number of the features of the course. The course is undulating with some long holes that necessitate powerful hitting, there is a good variety of interesting holes. Its location along the coast means that the weather is implemental in your game, you are exposed to winds here. There are a number of blind shots to contend with as well as some strategically placed bunkers.

The course has a nice flow and is well maintained, the greens are large and undulating and you will find them to be fast, firm and true, the fairways are quite narrow but gently rolling, the rough is graduated but tall, if your ball goes here good luck in finding it! You will not find a bad hole here, a number of them are superb in particular the par threes. The back nine holes are especially engaging, a number of the holes are close to the shore with distant views towards the Mountains of Mourne.

It is a mature scenic course that is very quiet and peaceful, it is without a doubt a quality links course.

Sometimes it is referred to as the ‘the hidden gem’ of Irish golf. County Louth is continuely ranking among the top golf courses in the world. It is a tough but fair course and good play will be rewarded. You need to be pretty accurate with your drives here.

Our Favourite Hole

The 14th hole without question, it is from here that you get the best view, and if you take a few steps forward can look down over almost the entire course. It is a short par 4, just measuring 332 yards so you can drive all the way to the green but, then end up taking a further six or more shots whilst, wondering what you did wrong.
