Course Description

Cork Golf Club is located in the far South of Ireland, in close proximity to Cork city, it is situated on a tiny peninsula known as Little Island, that juts out into the gorgeous Lough Mahon in one of the estuaries of the River Lee. It is frequently referred to as one of the most scenic golf courses in the country, providing fabulous views of nearby Cork Harbour. It is an old club dating back to 1888, the original nine hole course on the present site was completed in 1898, in 1927 it was improved and extended and little changes have been made since then, this says a lot about the excellent design of Dr Alister MacKenzie.

This 18 hole mature and graceful champion parkland course is a par 72 and is 6,731 yards from the back tees. The features of this course consist of large undulating terrain and fast greens, there is a lot of water present, often hidden by the trees. The natural features of the landscape, an old quarry, have been incorporated into the courses design, the dramatic terrain, using the natural humps and hollows make a unique and character course. The result is an ideal blend of pleasure and challenge so will appeal to most players. At first the layout can appear confusing but you soon get the hang of it.

The greens are large, mainly fast and undulating, they are perfect in both their shape and slope. The course starts out at a nice easy pace but, then picks up momentum quite quickly. The front holes are solid typical of a parkland course but this all changes once you get deeper into the course, it is completely different, these thrilling holes, dip into a quarry wrap around the harbour's shores and pledge sharp chasms and wicked greens, there is not a weak hole here. It is a course that will test you both mentally and physically.

The course has beauty, variety and challenge in perfect proportions. It also boasts history and tradition that a lot of clubs can't. Overall it is a wonderful course and not to be missed, it will test every part of your game.

Our Favourite Hole

We really like the 5th hole, a par 5, 578 yards, it runs parallel with the river and requires a long carry off the tee. It is necessary to have an exact shot, because the green appears to be cut into the side of the river, it actually sits on a narrow strip of land. It's a real doozy.
