Course Description

This unique links course is situated on the West Coast of Ireland, in County Galway. It lies on the Atlantic coast and is nestled amongst the Twelve Bens mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean, beautiful scenery making it the ideal location for this stunning course. The course opened in 1973 and was designed by Eddie Hackett, and comprises of 27 holes that are made up to three separate loops of nine holes, referred to as the front nine, back nine and coast nine. It is a par 72 and is 5,457 yards so a relatively short course, yet classed as one of the toughest links courses in the world.

The course enjoys a unique layout that works perfectly with the natural terrain and surroundings, there are a few man-made features on the course but, they work well overall. It is a traditional Irish links course that is a scenically pleasing course whilst being tough to complete.

The location of the club is somewhat remote but, don't let this deter you, it is well worth the journey. It is a excellent example of a pure links course with the sea on one side and surrounded by hills. Exposed to the elements yet using the contours of the land to the courses full advantage, the dunes are not as high or plentiful here as opposed to other links courses however, the course is dotted with stern and craggy rocks, these should be avoided if possible. Being on a wind-swept coastline, wind is a major factor here and can range from a gentle breeze to a gale so will greatly affect your game play. The greens are true and consistent, they are a mix of the lie of the land and slightly elevated, the fairways are firm and fast.

You will find the course to be fair but challenging, be prepared to work on those shots if you want to score well. Don't be lulled by the gentle opening, momentum builds throughout with the holes getting more difficult as you venture further along the course, to some of the most challenging holes around. The 14th and 15th holes are particularly difficult with their raised greens built into the hillside. There is not a weak hole on this course.

The course has uninterrupted and amazing panoramic views of the coastline and its beautiful sandy beaches and the Twelve Bens mountain range supply a sensational backdrop. It is visually pleasing course so take time to enjoy the scenery.

Our Favourite Hole

It is definitely the testing 211 yard par 3 13th hole, it is a beautiful hole and often considered the courses signature hole. It sits on a raised green and from here you will see that you need a direct strike on the ball to get it on the green, if you fall short you will roll back about 30 yards and if you veer left or right you end up in the bunkers. A real test of your abilities.
