Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum can be found in a rural setting in Roscommon in heart of Ireland. This delightful heritage museum is privately owned and focuses on Farm and Folk life in Ireland from the 18th century through to recent times.
The museum is also home to an interesting collection of more than six thousand artefacts of everyday items acquired over a thirty five year period, realting to the history, heritage and folk culture of Ireland. It includes, fully restored horse drawn machinery, tradesman's tools and butter-making equipment. They have succeeded in creating a magical step back in time as to what life was like in rural Ireland.
Visitors who have a curiosity about the lifestyle in past times will delight in all there is to see here. Housed within the museum are an eclectic and interesting assortment of items, from laundry memorabilia, with old and rare washing machines to a old-style sheep shears, a 1930's old-style thatched bar and grocery store to McCormacks photography room, including a dark room, finishing room, cameras as well as black and white colour processors, musical instruments to toys, tools to a rare bog butter and many, many more items. There is a new sports section as well as an old-style school room, with slates, slate pencils, dip pens, ink and blotting paper, how things have changed!
It is an excellent facility, well maintained and laid out and displayed in an accessible way, the quality of restoration is impressive, you can walk around admiring all the items on display and talk to the friendly owners who have an impressive in-depth knowledge on all the items on display, they are very dedicated and get really animated when discussing their museum.
Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum provides visitors with an exceptional insight into how those who lived many years ago were so self-sufficient. It serves as an excellent learning resource and gives a great insight into old rural Ireland, or for visitors of a certain age a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It is an attraction that will appeal to and fascinate all ages.
This charming museum is open from May to September, Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 6.00pm. It is necessary to make an appointment.
